My first poetry reading...

...as in, doing the actual reading, and not just sitting in the audience...was last night. I wasn't one of the featured poets, just an "open mic" type. I've done some teaching of both undergraduate and law school students, and, therefore, some public speaking, but reading poetry aloud has always scared me, because some of the readers do more acting than reading, and I don't have a thespian bone in my body. But I gave it a try, and am happy to report I survived. I read Marcie Lynn Tentchoff's "Star Boarding" from Sporty Spec and my own Boulevard Ghosts, which first appeared in Full Unit Hookup, and has been reprinted in several different venues.

The event was organized by Debbie Kolodji as part of Monday Night Poetry in Pasadena. It was the third annual science fiction and fantasy poetry night, and the featured readers were Kendall Evans and Denise Dumars. Below is a photo montage of (clockwise from left) Debbie, yours truly, Denise, and Kendall.

My pleasure! I wanted to read a poem from Sporty Spec to do the promo thing, so I'd tried a couple aloud beforehand, and yours rolled off the tongue most easily. :-)

I'm so glad she did - it was great to have your voice included.

If I had been more organized, I would have arranged for more poems by the sf poets who couldn't make it to be read.

Maybe at Eaton....

Congrats on your first reading, Karen! I shudder at the thought of public speaking.

Thanks, Kurt! Yeah, still not a big fan of public speaking. :-)

Don't feel too bad--if anyone who was there blinked, they missed it anyway (I only read two poems). ;-)

Hope to catch up with you again soon.

Hey Karen,

Great to know you took the "leap"! I think the trend is toward Thespian presentations, from what I saw/heard recently at the WHC in Salt Lake City. It's infectious! The good way, that is.

Sporty Spec: I have it here by my computer. I visit it frequently. Good job, Missus Editor!

Why are those shelves all empty when they so obviously want filling with books?

Good question.

I had every intention of standing up copies of the Rhysling Antho and other things there behind the readers but the thought fled my brain when I actually arrived there.

I've also thought of bringing posters or something to give it a more sf backdrop.

Maybe next time.

Camille,

The reading took place in the back meeting room of a small branch library in Pasadena, CA. My guess is that they once used the room for processing books, but repurposed it into a meeting room. It's a decidedly unpretty setting. If they want to keep the shelves, it would be nice if they covered them with a big Pasadena Public Library banner or something.

Debbie,

I do have a poster reprint for the early SF movie Metropolis, which is sitting in the garage not doing anything. I can try to bring it or get it to you for next time.
