Slush pile: The horror!

I've mentioned during previous reading periods that there always seems to be a glut of something in Raven Electrick's slush pile. Usually it's a subgenre or theme--one time it was poems about fairies, another it was astronomical poems. But this time it's an entire genre. For the first time ever, the vast majority of flash submissions are in the horror genre. I've never had one genre so predominate during a reading period. I'll assume it's just one of those coincidences and nothing to do with the current zeitgeist.

In any case, I've now responded to submissions sent through March 12.

I used to read all the flash for Ideomancer and when we're short handed, I still read some of the flash submissions.

I don't remember the last time I read a piece of flash that wasn't horror. :/

SF and fantasy usually hold their own in my flash slush pile. Maybe I'm just catching up with y'all at Ideomancer. ;-)

Eeep. I'm sorry if it's inappropriate to ask this, but if we sent something before March 12 and haven't heard back, should we be worried the sub went awry?

It did! Thank you. I'm sorry for the trouble--I don't know what happened the first time.

No problemo! The reason I post these little updates is so authors will have a backup source of information in case things get lost in the cybervoid.

Horror markets seem to be on the rise again, and I'd bet you're seeing the bounceback of that.

Poems about fairies, eh? I shudder to contemplate that slushpile. :)

Hey, what's wrong with poems about fairies? You should read some of my fairy poetry. I draw from the traditional fairy folklore, not the candy-coated Victorian version.

Of course, that means much of my fairy poetry is dark, but the tales often had a definite dark side.

I have... strong opinions when it comes to the craft of poetry. And there's a high correlation of frission between those opinions and what I've read of fairy poetry, regardless of their source material.

As for me, I tend not to be dismissive of any genre or subgenre. The skill of the practitioner is the most important aspect to me.

As for the fairy poems in my slush pile, I did end up purchasing the one I thought was best, "After the Change" by Marcie Lynn Tentchoff:

Another "fairy poem" in that batch was a close second, but I like to keep Raven Electrick eclectic, so one was enough for that season.

Thanks for your comments, guys!

From a speculative poet who frequently finds himself in the dark - dark works may be popular at the moment. Many of my darker works have met with success in slush pile limbo, and I find myself continually drifting back into darkness.

Maybe it does have something to do with the current zeitgeist.
